SUMMARY:Academic event- Immunology
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to share the line-up for our next academic event! Two fantastic speakers will present their research: \n\nDr Joseph Boyle:\nTitle: Visualising Innate Immune Signalling with CRISPR \nBio: \nJoe Boyle is a researcher at Clare Bryant’s group in the Department of Veterinary Medicine. He completed his PhD in the Cambridge Department of Biochemistry and then worked on the development of small molecule inhibitors of TLR4 in the university laboratory at the Stevenage Bioscience Catalyst. He now uses CRISPR-based approaches to investigate the endogenous function of innate immunity proteins and how they function in the context of infection and autoimmunity. \nAbstract: \nThe innate immune response is dependent on the rapid and controlled assembly of intracellular protein complexes following the detection of non-self molecular patterns. These complexes are often large and structurally heterogeneous\, which makes their in vitro examination using crystallography or electron microscopy challenging. Their visualisation in cellulo has also been complicated because they are maintained at low concentrations to prevent aberrant activation. Recent advances with CRISPR and photostable fluorescent proteins has allowed study of these complexes at their endogenous concentrations and has allowed initial characterisation of the novel immune complex – the TRIFosome. \n\nDr Prasun Kundu:\nTitle: Targeting Malaria: A Systematic Strategy to Identify and Prioritise Plasmodium vivax Blood-Stage Vaccine Targets\n\nBio: \nDr. Prasun Kundu is a Research Associate at the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research\, University of Cambridge. He earned his Ph.D. in Structural Biochemistry from IIT Kharagpur and completed postdoctoral training in structural immunology at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids)\, Toronto\, before joining Professor Julian C. Rayner’s laboratory at Cambridge\, where he works on malaria vaccine discovery. His research work has been recognised through distinctions such as the Marie Curie Seal of Excellence and multiple Best Poster Prizes at CIMR. He has published in leading journals\, including two first-author papers in Nature Communications\, and has been invited to speak at international meetings such as Protein Sciences in Drug Discovery 2024.\n\nAbstract: \nDr. Kundu’s research focuses on identifying and characterizing next-generation Plasmodium vivax blood-stage vaccine targets. He has developed a systematic reverse-vaccinology pipeline that integrates transcriptomics-guided antigen selection\, high-throughput antigen expression\, red blood cell binding assays\, and cross species growth inhibition assays using Plasmodium knowlesi and Plasmodium cynomolgi. This comprehensive approach has uncovered several promising vaccine candidates that are now undergoing ex vivo validation.\n\n  \nJoin us for pizza and drinks\, and what promises to be an engaging and impactful discussion on 4th December from 7pm at the Deighton room! \n  \nOrganised by Nandini Karthik.
