SUMMARY:Trinity Celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science
DESCRIPTION:Trinity College Postdoctoral Society (TCPDS) is proud to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science with the recognition it truly deserves. We are honoured to bring together three exceptional scientists whose work spans the breadth of modern research – from engineering next-generation materials and unravelling the mysteries of the microbiome in pregnancy\, to championing mental health and human resilience. Their journeys reflect not only scientific excellence\, but also a deep commitment to equity\, inclusion\, and inspiring the next generation of women in science. Join us for an evening of conversation\, discovery\, and celebration – complete with drinks and signature Trinity nibbles – as we recognise the important role women play in advancing science and the world. We cannot wait to have you with us. \nWe warmly and cordially invite students\, postdoctoral researchers and staffs from across all colleges of the University of Cambridge to be part of this special evening. Please sign up to secure your spot. \nVenue – Old Combination Room\, Trinity; Date – April 1st 2026; Time – Evening 18.00 -20.00 pm. \nJudith MacManus-Driscoll is Professor in the Materials Science at the University of Cambridge and Fellow of Trinity College. She is Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies.  She has been visiting faculty/staff member at Los Alamos National Lab. for over 20 years. She is fellow of the Royal Society of London\, the Royal Academy of Engineering\, APS\, AAAS\, MRS\, RSC\, IOP\, IOM3\, WES. Her research covers electronic materials. She has many licensed patents\, consults widely with industry worldwide\, and has two start-ups. She has numerous prizes for her work from Materials\, Physics\, Chemistry and EE societies. She is a strong supporter of women in science/engineering and recently spearheaded this paper:  https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/2515-7655/ae26cb \nDr Priscilla Day-Walsh is a Next Generation Fellow at the Centre for Trophoblast Research based in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the University of Cambridge. She is also as a Bye-Fellow at Homerton College\, University of Cambridge and is a visiting scientist at the Quadram Institute Biosciences in Norwich\, UK. Her research bridges microbiology\, developmental biology\, pharmacology\, multi-omics\, and data from large pregnancy cohorts to uncover how the microbiome shapes pregnancy physiology. She aims to identify key mechanisms that link microbial activity to maternal and fetal health. She seeks to identify sensitive microbiome-based biomarkers and therapeutic targets\, for the screening\, prevention\, and treatment of pregnancy complications. Dr Day-Walsh is also a passionate advocate for equity in reproductive research\, healthcare\, and innovation. She engages widely with the public\, clinicians\, researchers\, and policymakers (nationally and internationally) to champion inclusive approaches\, especially highlighting the urgent need for action on uterine fibroids and disparities in reproductive outcomes. \nDr. Olivia Remes is an Assistant Professor at the University of Cambridge\, and her research focuses on mental health and wellbeing. She has developed a system of coping strategies that help people thrive and flourish\, attain mental wellbeing\, and overcome setbacks in life. She has delivered seminars and webinars on mental wellbeing to organisations around the world\, helping people learn how to thrive in spite of adversity and change. Her PhD at the University of Cambridge\, based on data from over 30\,000 people\, focused on what makes people anxious and depressed\, and coping strategies that protect against poor mental health. For two years\, Olivia created\, produced and hosted her own radio show\, “The Cambridge Talk Show” that taught people how to overcome self-doubt\, stress\, adversity\, and become resilient in any area of their lives. She has given TED talks viewed over 2 million times\, writes for Vogue\, and is a regular contributor to BBC Cambridgeshire radio.  Her book was released in 2021 and published by Penguin Random House. Olivia recently published two books: The Instant Mood Fix: Emergency Remedies to Beat Anxiety\, Panic\, or Stress and This is How You Grow After Trauma. \n  \nOrganised and hosted by TCPDS President Dr. Mousumi Shyam (pd.president@trin.cam.ac.uk) \n
